Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb from the roots of Withania somnifera, a plant in the nightshade (Solanaceae) family.
Ashwagandha has been part of herbal and ayurvedic for centuries. Due to its ability to support the function of both body and mind, ashwagandha is one of Ayurveda's most prized herbs.
Ashwagandha Extract 1000mg tablets is obtained from the plant. The plant‘s scientific name is Withania somnifera. Its popular name is the Indian ginseng.
The name "somnifera" means "sleep-inducing" in Latin. It is thought to be sleep-inducing hence the reason it was named so.
Ashwagandha is an annual evergreen shrub in the Solanaceae or nightshade family of plants that grows particularly in some parts of India, the Middle East, and some parts of Africa. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar.
It has been thought to be effective as some form of herbal medicine and it is usually sold in Ayurveda and also sold in many countries. In most countries, it is sold as a source of dietary supplement.
Ashwagandha contains some phytochemical constituents called withanolides. Withanolides consist of triterpene lactones withaferin A, alkaloids, steroidal lactones, tropine, and cuscohygrine. There are a total of about 40 withanolides, 12 alkaloids, and numerous sitoindosides in Ashwagandha. The structures of withanolides are structurally similar to the ginsenosides of Panax ginseng, leading to a common name for W. somnifera, "Indian ginseng".
